Just might be painful. More than likely, 3 pre-season top 10 teams on the road, including the likely #1 in Bama...all with a young QB.
If we Finish 10 - 2 next year, that would be quite an accomplishment IMO.

No way we finish better than 9-3 next year IMO. Not a knock on PSU, but the road schedule is difficult and we have some holes to fill. I agree appoo, 10-2 would be quite an accomplishment.

I've already conceded next year ... I'll be happy with 8-4 ... 7-5 would be a small disappointment but I'm thinking 2011 already ...
But as long as they get Joe win number 400 next year ... get a lot of young guys some playing time ... I think they'll be in prime position to make a run in 2011. Next year we need to develop the young guys and get a stable stud QB for 2011.

With the lack of experience at QB and the drop off at LB, as well as Joe's belief that freshman are clueless, I think anything more than 8 wins is VERY wishful thinking...Oh, then there is the DB's ...see TD pass by Pryor in this year's OSU game....
Man, that is negative...I know the season just ended...just saying...

Three away games( the obvious ones), but I see them being able to win the rest. 9-3 with a date in Tampa, or Jacksonville.

Sorry dutch...I can't believe this myth continues. We had a large number of true frosh playing quite a bit this past season including my personal favorite Steph Morris. I think we have our work cut out for us, but fear of playing freshmen if they are game ready is NOT part of the equation. Joe wants to win and he will make use of the personnel that gives him the best shot (unless they do something stupid like not going to class).

9-4-10 YOUNGSTOWN STATE <<W>> 9-11-10 at Alabama <<L>> 9-18-10 KENT STATE <<W>> 9-25-10 TEMPLE <<W>> 10-2-10 at Iowa <<L>> 10-9-10 ILLINOIS <<W>> 10-23-10 at Minnesota <<W>> 10-30-10 MICHIGAN <<?>> 11-6-10 NORTHWESTERN <<?>> 11-13-10 at Ohio State <<L>> 11-20-10 Indiana @Landover, MD <<W>> 11-27-10 MICHIGAN STATE <<?>>
6 wins, 3 losses, 3 question marks
I think we will probably beat Michigan and Michigan State, and lose to Northwestern, but they are toss-ups to me until some things crystallize with us and with the other teams. We may be tired heading into Michigan and with NW, we may be looking ahead. MSU will be a microcosm of our season depending on how we mature physically and mentally. Same can be said for Sparty, for that matter.
So, 8-4 is meeting expectations in my book.

OL,
I guess what I referring to is his "well....he hasn't had a lot of experience in there so I am reluctant to put him in a tough situation" which JP seems to say a lot.

Next season should be an interesting one to watch and follow. It will undoubtedly be frustrating at times, as there will be some growing pains. I do feel as though next season will be one in which the team that we see in November will be much improved over the team that we see in September.
The biggest question marks will be at QB, TE, solidification of the OLine and LBer. Because of those question marks, and the tentativeness which that may cause in coaching, game planning and execution, the trips to Alabama and Iowa early on may be rather painful.
I do believe that, by the time we hit the home stretch with Northwestern, Ohio State, Indiana and Michigan State, that we will be a much better that is beginning to show signs of what could be some pretty successful seasons in the future.
I, also, suspect that you'll see a record number of true freshmen garnering meaningful playing time next year. Miles Dieffenbach and Mike Hull immediately come to mind as two guys who could work their way into starting roles by the end of the year.
Two of the more intriguing story lines to watch this spring and through the early part of the season will be 1) Shuffling on the OLine and 2) How the LBing corp shakes out.
Miles Dieffenbach had mentioned that Wiz would not be at center next season. Obviously, things can and do change, but could open the door for Miles, who did extremely well as center in the UA AA Game. Does Eric Shrive lock down a starting job? Which of the other young guys will get playing time?
At LBer, we are replacing all three starters. Mike Mauti is ahead of schedule with his rehab, but will be be ready for the opener? Does Chris Colasanti continue to ride the pine and get passed by everyone stepping on campus? Does Bani "Human Pinball" Gbadyu improve his tackling ability and lock down a starting position? His minutes have decreased as each of the past two seasons have worn on. Can Glenn Carson rehab his back and get in good enough shape to be ready to make an impact? Can Nate Stupar get healthy and get back to his old form? Can Mike Yancich finally break through? Does Michael Zordich stay at FB or does he get moved back to LBer? Does Gerald Hodges stay at LBer or does he get moved back to safety? And, finally, how do Mike Hull, Dakota Royer and Khairi Fortt pan out?
My best guess is an 8-4 season. We either lose all 4 on the road, or beat Minnesota and lose 1 that we shouldn't at home. A 10-2 mark next season would be absolutely tremendous, and should give us all a ton of optimism for the future of Penn State football.

MSU has many problems, one of which is, they still haven't figured out how to score more points at Beaver Stadium than the home team does. I count that one as a win, no matter how many Freshmen we play( of course, it is the last game). 9-3 is attainable, in my humble opinion. 10-2 and Joe should be considered for Coach Of The Year in 2010.

Unless we have someone make a huge impact at either QB or RB (assuming Royster is gone), I think 8-4 is the high end for next year with the most probable outcome of 7-5.

QB: Paul Jones, Kevin Newsome
Absent an injury, there is absolutely no chance that Jones is awarded the starting job over Newsome. None. Zippy. Zero. Zilch. Nada. Zero. Zip.

Jones will be here in the Spring...and I have a feeling that JoePa has little faith in Newsome. Normally, in the course of a season Joe always talks about how he has a few good QBs. This year he almost never talked up Newsome, and even went as far as to say he wasn't comfortable with the QB situation behind Clark, and told Jay that Clark wasn't allowed to run.
Normally, I think Newsome would have an inside track because he has a year of 1st team reps under him, but I don't think that will be the case. Penn State needs someone who can pass the ball.
EDIT
Matt McGloin might actually be the odds on favorite to win the job. It's a truly open competition this year

appoo,
Agree re: Newsome and JoePa. Joe even told Jay and Galen heading into the Cap One Bowl not to run Clark much because he wasn't comfortable that Newsome could handle things.
Tough to argue with any depth chart at this point in the year, and with the questions marks we have. I think yours has as good of a chance at being correct as any other. Once we get well into Spring practice, I suspect that things will start to pan out a bit.
I will make mention of two things, however:
1) The addition of Zach Zwinak may send Michael Zordich back to LBer.
2) With Zordich moving back to LBer, Stupar getting healthy, Dakota Royer saying that the coaches would start him at LBer (because he doesn't have the size right now to play DE), and with Hull, Fortt and Carson coming on board, I think that pushes Hodges back to safety.
