The initial Scout Top 150 for the Class of 2011 is out. Keep in mind that this is a very rough draft of what this list might look like on signing day next year. New players will get added, pushing others off, as they evaluate new film, see these kids in camps and combines, and follow them through their senior seasons.
Anyways, here are some names that we've been linked to as well as names from our recruiting territory:
5-Star Players
National Overall Rank 5, Cyrus Kouandjio, OT, Hyattsville, MD 7, Lawrence Thomas, MLB, Detroit, MI 13, Ben Koyack, TE, Oil City, PA 20, Jameel Poteat, RB, Harrisburg, PA
4-Star Players
31, Savon Huggins, RB, Jersey City, NJ 37, Curtis Grant, OLB, Richmond, VA 44, Travis Hughes, MLB, Virginia Beach, VA 52, Conor Hanratty, OT, New Canaan, CT 61, Angelo Mangiro, OG, Succasunna, NJ 68, Darius Jennings, QB, Baltimore, MD 76, Terrell Chestnut, CB, Pottstown, PA 85, Landon Turner, OT, Harrisonburg, VA 91, Ishaq Williams, DE, Brooklyn, NY 100, Lafonte Thourogood, WR, Virginia Beach, VA 107, Demetrious Nicholson, CB, Virginia Beach, VA 115, Dondi Kirby, WR, Monroeville, PA (Gateway) 122, Mike Caputo, OLB, Imperial, PA 139, Damiere Byrd, WR, Erial, NJ 146, Dominique Terrell, CB, Manassas, VA
The following players are rated 4-Star, but are not included in the top 150:
Quinta Funderburk, WR, Chesapeake, VA Quentin Gause, OLB, Rochester, NY Kyshoen Jarrett, CB, East Stroudsburg, PA Tyrone Johnson, QB, Plainfield, NJ Kevin McReynolds, DT, Washington, DC Maika Polamalu, RB/LB/S, East Stroudsburg, PA Sheldon Royster, S, Jersey City, NJ
As is evident, there is a ton of talent in our traditional recruiting region. There is absolutely no reason why, with such a small class, that we shouldn't be able to bring in the highest level of talent across the board.
.............................
Here is a breakdown of talent levels per state, showing the states with the most players and some of the states that are of interest to PSU fans:
Texas - 26 players Florida - 17 players Ohio - 13 players California - 13 players Georgia - 7 players Louisiana - 7 players
Virginia - 6 players Pennsylvania - 5 players New Jersey - 3 players Maryland - 2 players New York - 1 player Connecticut - 1 player

That's actually the first I've read someone rating Poteat over Huggins. Interesting. I'm sure that'll change alot between the camps and senior year though. We're recruiting Lawrence Thomas pretty hard. I'm hoping our LBU legend can lure him out of Michigan.

Michigan's Defense should lure him out of Michigan.

Two other names to add to the above mentioned:
Nationally Unranked 4-Star, Albert Louis-Jean, CB, Brockton, MA 3-Star, Melvin Robinson, WR, Annandale, VA
The staff is reportedly very high on Louis-Jean, and he very well pick up an early offer.
Robinson is Stephon Morris's cousin.

One other kid quince(sp?) Funderburke, out of VA. He's a bigtime reciever prospect with all the big boys chasing - he also went to HS with Bama's Phillip Sims and our own Evan Hailes.

Quinta Funderburk (listed above). At this point, he has neither a verbal nor written offer.

Scout guy swapped texts with him yesterday, after the report came out on Rivals. Nothing yet on either front.

Chris you hear anything about DeAnthony Arnett? He's a stud reciever out of Michigan, and he's talking about all the big boys offering including the likes of Iowa, Michigan MSU, USC, and ND but never mentions PSU. I think it's strange that we wouldn't try to recruit him at all - we must have known about him considering the kids we got out of Michigan last year.

I haven't heard anything about him. I'm sure that Vandy has, however. You've got to think that we are bringing in 1 receiver this year, so they may only offer 2-3 WRs total and take the first one. Recruiting will be awfully picky this year.

A couple of notes on the above listed players:
Travis Hughes (MLB, VA) was interviewed recently by Scout, and he couldn't stop gushing over PSU and Linebacker U when simply asked about which schools he was interested in. He doesn't have an offer yet, but would likely be a heavy PSU lean if he did.
CB is obviously a big need for PSU this year. Their targets are Terrell Chestnut, Kyshoen Jarrett, Albert Luis-Jean, and Demetrius Nicholson. The regional Scout guy says that he thinks Nicholson is the best of the bunch.
The only safety that they know of in connection to Penn State is Maika Polamalu.

His brother plays for Maryland, and VaTech has a lot of interest as well...seems like those would be his top 3 schools right now.
There doesn't seem to be any stud LBs in PA this year, so I think Lawrence Thomas will be our top priority at that position
