2010 Baseball Season
      #188216 - 03/17/10 10:07 AM

Season is less than 3 weeks away and I've already had my fantasy draft, so I figured time to kick off the real thread.

BASEBALL, BABY!!!!

I'm not going to do whole league predictions, just my guesses for the post season and a few comments on other teams people here follow:

AL
East - Yankees all the way.
Central - I like the White Sox here with the Burhle, Peavy 1 - 2 punch. I think they are a much improved team
West - I think the Angels have lost so much that the Rangers finally take that division.
Wild Card - Red Sox.

NL
East - Phillies take it and I think Hamels has a big bounce back year
Central - Cardinals.
West - Dodgers, but I would not be shocked if the Giants took the division
Wild Card - Giants, maybe Brewers. I don't think the Brewers have the pitching, though.

Other teams that get mentioned here:
Mets - Many of the same problems as last year. I think they can finish over .500 but not a contender. They need another arm.

Pirates - another year in paradise. Under .500 and more mind scratching trades. The Pirates have some young talent which I'm sure they will trade away for nothing.

Mariners - I think they could have a good year but I'm hoping they collapse and trade Cliff Lee to a surging Mets team. Not likely, but I can wish.

Rays - They are a .500 team but with that staff you never know.

I cannot wait for opening day.

Did anyone see the rumors that the Phillies-Cardinals were in discussions for a Pujols-Howard trade? The logic was the Cardinals felt they could not afford to pay Pujols when he becomes a free agent.

I don't believe even a bit of this rumor as it has 2 major flaws:
1. I don't think the Phillies can afford Pujols either and, quite honestly, I think he is more likely to take a discount to stay in STL. If he does leave, then he's probably going to grab every dollar he can, and I think he's worth more than ARod.
2. Howard is not going to command nearly as much money as Pujols but it's not like he's going to be cheap when he comes due either.

Anyway, it's out there and it's gotten a decent amount of press. I'm surprised that GMay hasn't mentioned it yet, to be honest.

I can buy most of your predictions. I'd probably go Twins in the AL Central but the White Sox certainly could take them. I'm refraining from picking the M's in the West because I don't want to jinx so I'll hop on the Rangers bandwagon. I don't agree that the Rays are a .500 team though. They might be the 3rd best team in the AL. Too bad the best 2 play in their division.

That's why I said they are about a .500 team. And, that is still 81 wins in a season, which is not bad. Maybe they win 82 or 83 but they are just about at .500 and most likely will not make the playoffs. Anything can happen in a 6 month season, though.

I picked the White Sox because I think their rotation is better than the Twins. And, now that Nathan is gone for the year, I really don't see the Twins making that big push.

Man, I cannot wait for opening day!

I agree with psubalt. Based on what I've seen so far, I think the Devil Rays could be a PITA all year. The imbalance in the AL divisions is really a joke. A team from the AL East has won the AL pennant 9 of the last 12 years ... but I guess they can't do much about that.

Opening Day [Re: psu_dad]
      #188488 - 03/25/10 01:32 PM

It seems that some people around here are annoyed that the RS "Opening Day" game is an Easter Sunday night game against Satan's Disciples the Yankees (on national TV). Historically, the RS have opened the season with a weekday afternoon game ... and blowing off work to watch it has become a time-honored ritual.

Mrs. psu_dad: You didn't apologize for double-posting.
Me: Apologizing is a sign of weakness.

If more than 24 hours has passed between posts it is no longer a "double post" and, therefore, an apology is not necessary.

I am optimistic that the Orioles will particpate in the season through September. I think it's possible if some guys have career years and their young talent develops sooner than expected they could win as many as 70 games.
